The 1978-D Eisenhower Dollar holds a special place in U.S. coinage as the last year of the Ike Dollar series.
The Eisenhower Dollar was first minted in 1971 to honor President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing. The 1978 issue marks the final year before the smaller Susan B. Anthony Dollar replaced it in 1979.
The obverse features Eisenhower’s portrait, designed by Frank Gasparro.
The 1978-D Eisenhower Dollar is a common issue, but high-grade uncirculated specimens are sought after.
Unlike some earlier Ike Dollars (1971–1976 special collector editions), the 1978-D does not contain silver and is made of copper-nickel clad.
PCGS and NGC-graded examples in high Mint State grades can fetch premium prices.
The 1978-D Eisenhower Dollar is a great addition to any collection, especially for those interested in modern U.S. coinage.
While common in lower grades, finding a pristine Mint State example is a rewarding challenge.
