The Kennedy Half Dollar was first minted in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy after his assassination. By 1979, the coin was widely circulated but contained no silver, as silver was phased out after 1970.
Type 1 (Filled S) – The "S" mintmark appears blob-like due to excessive wear on the die.
Type 2 (Clear S) – Features a sharper, well-defined "S," making it more desirable for collectors.
While not a rare coin, high-grade uncirculated and proof specimens, particularly the Type 2 1979-S proof, are desirable among collectors.
Some may mistakenly believe the 1979 Kennedy Half Dollar contains silver, but only special silver-clad editions (from 1976 or certain collector sets) have silver content.
While not a key rarity, the 1979 Kennedy Half Dollar holds historical significance and is an affordable entry for beginner collectors.
Coins graded MS65 or higher by NGC or PCGS can command higher prices.
Proof coins graded PR69 or PR70 can be valuable, especially Type 2 varieties.
