American Eskimo (Eskie) Dog Facts: Temperament, Training & Health

Eskies are known for their affectionate and loyal nature. They thrive on human companionship and can be quite the velcro dog, following their owners everywhere. However, this means they can also suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods.

American Eskimos are highly intelligent and love to learn—but their independent streak can make training a challenge. Positive reinforcement works best, along with consistency and patience. From basic commands to agility tricks, these dogs excel when properly motivated.

Eskies are active dogs that require regular physical and mental stimulation. Without enough exercise, they can become destructive or vocal. Daily walks, playtime, and puzzle toys are essential for keeping them happy and well-behaved.

That beautiful fluffy coat isn’t low-maintenance! Eskies shed year-round, with heavier shedding seasons in spring and fall. Regular brushing (at least 2-3 times a week) helps keep their fur tangle-free and reduces shedding around the house.

Eskies are generally healthy but can be prone to conditions like hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and patellar luxation. Routine vet checkups, a balanced diet, and proper exercise can help maintain their well-being.

Eskies need high-quality food rich in protein and healthy fats. Some owners opt for raw or homemade diets, but commercial dog food with lean meats and essential nutrients works well too. Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid obesity.

American Eskimos are great with families, including children and other pets. They are social dogs that enjoy being part of household activities. Proper socialization from an early age helps them develop good manners around strangers and animals.

Despite their name, they have no direct ties to Eskimos—they originated in Germany! They were once popular circus performers due to their intelligence and trainability.  Eskies come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard.  They have a distinctive "Eskie Smile" that melts hearts. Their thick coats make them more comfortable in cooler climates.
